The use of gender neutral or gender inclusive pronouns is one way of respecting one’s gender identity and creating a positive safe space for them to be themselves.
One may ask about someone’s preferred pronouns and use it when referring to the individual. One may also include the pronouns they use during their introduction to encourage the other party to interact.
Not only does it normalize and promote inclusivity but also lets the other person feel welcome and safe to hold a conversation with you. When in doubt, you can always use the pronouns they/their/them since almost no one finds it offensive or call the other person by name instead.
Gender based discrimination and misgendering often happens so when the latter happens one can gently correct the person and apologize to the individual and not make a big deal out of it. If it’s the former, please speak up.
